The New Weekly Photo Modelling Challenge #27 - Cote Et Ciel Meuse Backpack

How Does This Work Then?

Each week or two myself or 3D Total's photo resource will provide a set of photo's to model from.

Each challenge we would like all who participate to model from the same references to learn, improve or showcase your ability in modelling from a photo set.

In my version of this challenge there are no limits to how many tris/quads you wish to use, but I would like to see you all try to match the photo as closely as possible in size & shape aswell as texturing too.

The Rules

Please post your wires, clays, & any texture sheets and final renders in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules.

The Prizes

The only prizes are a gold, silver and bronze awards dictated by these lovely little icons

Deadline Date: Friday 10.00pm GMT 17th January 2013

Deadline Timer

This Weeks Challenge:

In this challenge we're are trying something a little different.... going for a backpack, there's organic cloth/fabric elements as well as hard surface plastic & metallic details. The variety of different shapes on this one should be a welcome challenge.

I haven't seen the photo refs CG's posted but your model doesn't match the thumbmail in post #1. There's no cover (short of a better word) on it. There should just be a zip on the front. Not sure my explanations are clear though!

Also, you should spread support edges you have added cos they make a hard seam around your model.

Anyway it's looking good so far and you still have a full week left to tweak your model and post again for further reviewing.

Hi Mcfly,

Thanks for the feedback, you have explained it perfectly. I have drifted from the original reference images quite a bit but it was mostly intentional I wanted to try and make the model a bit more interesting to look at.

The hard edges around the side pocket and below the pocket im intending to make plastic, do you mean the support edges around the bag itself, if so then yes I can see what you mean I need to widen the support lines to give it a more rolled over softer edge I totally agree.

I will try and make some amendments based on your comments.

Thanks again

Not a bad model at all, but like McFly said the model don't match the references. This are a Photo Modelling challenge, and the point of these challenges is to get as close to the reference pictures as possible, that means the overall shapes, color texture and so on.

But like i said, not a bad model. But not quite what this challenge was asking for either.

Thumbs up

Hi MStander,

Thanks for the feedback, I think I paid more attention to this in bold text :

The Rules:

Please post your wires, clays, & any texture sheets and final renders in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules.

when I should have read the part about matching the reference images exactly.

I do have an earlier save file in max of the model without most of the details, so I may start from fresh from that point.

I apologise for not reading the rules properly and next time will match my model to references.

Thanks

Hey Snake. I think "not too strict" means you don't need to show wireframes or renders at a specific sizes or use a max # of polys:

In my version of this challenge there are no limits to how many tris/quads you wish to use, but I would like to see you all try to match the photo as closely as possible in size & shape aswell as texturing too.

So try to make your model look like the one in the references. It might prove difficult at times but I find it rewarding in the end. So go and hack it away!

CG > I would like to participate but I have to finish the SMC first. If there are many entries here you can always move the deadline.

nah I don't know Johnny, I don't think it's too difficult, i guess people just have other things going on atm, with the SMC, and other challenges.
But if you haven't modelled this type of stuff before, with hardsurface mixed with the organic parts of the fabric, it can be a tough one and a intimidating one for sure, but i belive we have had challenges that were more difficult than this one, in terms of shape, texture and so on.

And then we have another thing, and that is that the forums seem to have less activity nowadays, but that goes in waves. And I know that i'm a part of that too

Hi All,

sorry for the delay in response but its been 44 degrees centigrade here today and ive been hiding in the ocean today, anyways back on topic, I think the deadline is fine im sure I can get something finished by next Friday, it may not be textured but see how we go.

Yeah that's the part I "glossed" over mcfly lol, this is the first time ive modelled a backpack and I must admit I found it tricky to even get something as basic as my model out.

btw whats the SMC?

Also is there a problem with the portfolios section of the website as I keep getting a 505 error upon trying to upload to my folder ive created.

thanks in advance.
