Maya Mental Ray - Bump Map with Mi_Car_Paint_Phen

Hello!

The question of plugging a bump map into a Mental Ray material with no bump map slot bugged me for a few hours until i solved the problem so i am now sharing it with you so it speeds up your work flow!

Now!

You will need BumpCombiner Available from the link below, there is two on for 32bit and 64bit.

http://www.box.net/shared/i6hd2271qk

Read me file are included in the .rar file follow instructions for installation details.

Now!

Create a Normal Maya Blinn and Create a bump through a file as you normally would!

You can have it set to Bump or Tangent Space Normals!

Now Find the file which is your bump map or normal map.

Now Delete the Blinn Shader, Which will still leave the Bump, file and the Placement node!

Go to your Create Mental Ray Nodes Tab
And Under Materials Create BumpCombiner!

"Also Create your Mi_Car_Paint_Phen And adjust the setting to what you would like, and if you have a color map plug your color map into the "Base Color" "

Now We are nearly there!

Open your BumpCombiner1 Attribute editor and Middle Mouse click and Drag your Mi_Car_Paint_Phen into the M Input Slot

And Make sure M Bump Enabled box is ticked

Also go to your Utilities Tab in your Hypershade and Middle mouse Click and Drag your Bump Node into M Bump 0.

It should end up looking like this when Graph Networked

Apply your BumpCombiner to your object and click Render!

If you have any questions or Comments please feel free! as well as any crits or faster ways of doing this!

Question

I recieve:

Code:
// Warning: (Mayatomr.Custom) : /usr/autodesk/maya/mentalray/include/bumpCombiner.mi: no shader library specified nor found in search path, expect manual loading //
So, maybe we need bumpCombiner.so shader file? Can't find it in install archieve.

P.S And interface in that I download from link above is quite different from UI on screenshots

Maya Mental Ray

mental ray accepts scene data using its .mi scene description language in either ASCII or mixed ASCII/binary form, whose specification is precisely defined in the documentation. Supported geometric primitives include polygons, trimmed free-form surfaces, hair, and subdivision surfaces (in conjunction with the mental matter® product). Run-time linking of user-supplied C and C++ code allows the creation of procedural textures, materials, new lighting models, volume and lens effects, control of global illumination simulation through photon shaders and the Photon Map™ as well as displacement maps. The free-form surface processing and approximation capabilities, and the mathematical accuracy of the software are superior to those of competing rendering software products.

Maya Mental Ray - Bump Map with Mi_Car_Paint_Phen

hi,
Is there a way of rendering a .mi file (maybe of someones elses Max) within Max. I mean open Max, load or import the .mi file and render right away like one would in the standalone version.Afraid not, Max can only export a .mi file.
