Lightbulb 3DTotal Modelling Club

Hi All,

I was thinking of an idea and just wondering if anyone would be interested. As you may know we are building up a large library of free textures and reference images, and it would be good to start adding some models to this library too.

We are starting to photograph some of the more interesting objects in great detail, such as this one and I was wondering if people would quite simply like to have a go at making models of them and submitting them to the library? If it takes off we could make it more official with its own forum etc and it could serve as a great place to practice modelling skills, get feedback and also support 3DTotal.

Please post here if you are interested and post any renders of any first attempts. The entire high res photo set of this object can be found here metal container.

Many thanks

Tom

Well we could add a new photo set of a cool model, at least once per week, and then it's just for fun really whoever wants to have a go at making it. If it takes off we could pick the best couple to go into the model library and maybe give them an ebook or something as a prize? I guess 'how it's going to work' depends on the interest we get. But I do know a lot of people like to just make models for fun, so at least this give a bit of purpose and direction.

Cheers

Tom

I had a head's up about this competition and earlier this week had a go so here's my attempt, not very accurate and not great texturing wise but thoroughly enjoyed modelling it.

....and so I dare you to do better.....................which judgeing the above won't be hard will it? lol

Indeed an interesting idea!
I'm not quite active here in the forums, but this could be a motivation!

In addition to the idea itself and what Psycho Mantis suggested
I would say it would be cool, if you guys could provide a bunch of different objects about the same topic. e.g.: When you provide pictures of such a container, give also images of other objects you can find at construction areas.
This would may give you a nice set of models and gives people the ability to use the for their scenes. (one single object is in most cases not enough)

And this e-book thingy would be awesome - but not essential!

Some more questions:
What file format should it be?
What level of detail?
Should we provide just the model, or do we have to UV and texture the models?

Maybe you should also provide a render scene to make the "look" a bit more uniform!?

Nice idea, I am very interested

As BattleMaster asked: do we need to unwrap and texture it?
Should it be low-poly, mid-poly or hi-poly?

I think we initally thought mid to high poly so as to give all modellers a chance to have a go as it were, I think you can also choose whether to texture or not as the model library will more than likely be models.....if it takes off we could probably add models or indeed scenes that are textured and lit accordingly aswell and then after that it could possibly go software specific with models or scenes modelled specifically for those programs.

File formats such as Wavefront's OBJ seems to be the best format that the majority of programs can both export and import.....

...all this is guesswork though, can you confirm Tom?

Wee, cool thread. Seems a bit inspired by some of the small contest threads like Zlatovous' thread .

Good initiative! A bit more relaxed then the large challenges.

i think i will club away here... After 3 months of intensive work, my boss told me i should work less cause he can't pay that much for my activity and doing "too good" of a job. Never thought it would come to this, but it did.

I will have some time to devote to modeling.
